  • Brand: Star/TAMA
  • Condition: White marine pearl wrap has been cleaned and waxed and has a decent finish except for some extra holes that were likely for original throw off butt plate and tone control. There is no badge but one that was there appears to have been oval or rounded from marks on the wrap around the vent hole. Star most commonly used 5mm thread tension rods on snares and toms so standard tension rods will not work. The 5mm rods can be tough to find. All of the batter side tension rods appear original and work well, five of the tension rods on the resonant side appear original and work wel

    Description

For auction is a 14” (5 x 14”) vintage white marine pearl wrapped snare drum probably from the 1960s.  My experts tell me that it is a pre TAMA drum made by Star in Japan in the 1960s.  There is a “K” stamped inside the shell.
It is a decent players drum.
Drum plays well but it is being sold for parts as many are not original to the drum.  White marine pearl wrap has been cleaned and waxed and has a decent finish except for some extra holes that were likely for the original throw off butt plate and tone control. Extra holes have been filled with putty and can be easily drilled out.  It has a 1-ply (maple?) or 3-ply shell with inside reinforcing rings about 3/4” wide, edges are rounded.  Lugs appear to be original to the drum and are in good condition with hardly noticeable tiny pitting.  It has a Ludwig P-85 style throw off installed, a Ludwig style tone control and unlabeled snare wires. The 8 lug chrome steel hoops are new. There is no badge but one that was there appears to have been oval or rounded from marks on the wrap around the vent hole. Star most commonly used 5mm thread tension rods on snares and toms so standard tension rods will not work. The 5mm rods can be tough to find. All of the batter side tension rods appear original and work well, five of the tension rods on the resonant side appear original and work well but two have 5mm screws from Ace Hardware which seem to work but the thread count may not be correct, someone replaced the threads in one of the lugs to accept a standard thread tension rod. Heads are used and in playable condition, batter head is a Remo Powerstroke, resonant head is a HD Dry Evens Level 360.  Shipping by UPS Ground in the Continental US is .00.
