It all started with a bang!
Needing a snare drum to play in the school band, the original and only owner purchased the WFL Drums Ludwig Drum Co. branded 5.5" x 14" 6-lug snare drum with a Black/Gold Duco lacquer finish in 1957. Following his departure from school and deciding to join a local band, rumor has it said band was the earliest formation of The Shondells, playing school dances, local pubs and the like, he purchased the matching Ludwig 3-piece shell kit, hardware and cymbals as needed add-ons in 1962 - which corresponds with the 3-26-1962 date stamp on the bass drum.
After his brief stint with the band and then moving on to other ventures, he vowed to keep the drums in as best condition as possible... almost never touching them ever again and keeping them properly stored until his decision to bring them to us.
With all the swagger of the late 50's and early 60's, this Ludwig Club Date kit has stage ready looks, studio equipped sound and comfortable vintage feel that is matched by none other.
Featuring a 9x3 6-lug rack tom, a 8-lug 12x15 floor tom, a 10-lug 14x22 bass drum and a 5.5x14 6-lug snare drum. The original hardware included is a Ludwig Speed King hi-hat stand, a Ludwig Universal Speed Master bass pedal, an unbranded (but original) cymbal stand and a bass drum-mounted cymbal stand.
The 1957 5.5x14 WFL Drums Supreme Concert Pioneer snare features 6-lugs, a "WFL DRUMS" keystone badge, a Black/Gold Ducor lacquer finish and is has a red date stamp of "SEP 24 1957" - PLUS, it's
all original down to the snare wires except for the two heads.
The accompanying Ludwig Club Date shell kit features the "Ludwig" keystone badges, all original hardware on all three drums, the inside of the bass drum has a black date stamp of "MAR 24 1962" and the bass drum has the original Gold Sparkle hoops... adding a touch of flair to this exquisite masterfully built titan.
Just in case that wasn't enough, this kit also includes the pictured cymbals, of which hold their own when it comes to the "cool factor" of vintage drum gear. The 22" ride cymbal features the "Ludwig Paiste Made in Germany" stamp and has a vintage Sizzle removable attachment - a sound indicative of the time period. The 16" Zanchi (later changed to Zanki in the 1970's) Vibra crash cymbal is stamped "Vibra Cymbals Zanchi F&F", although some has worn off due to play. The hi-hat set is mismatched and features a
12" hi-hat top that is stamped "Other bonus pieces are the Ludwig brass cowbell and Ludwig temple/jam block - both of which are mounted on the bass drum - and 2 sets of vintage Ludwig branded retractable brushes - 1 set that is mildly functional and 1 set that can be harvested for parts or potentially revamped - and 1 set of vintage Ludwig 451 mallets; all of which truly encompasses the time period in which this drum set was manufactured and the musical greatness that was achieved during this time.
Adding stage glitz is the unique Black/Gold Duco lacquer finish, which is in great shape and aids in bringing calm and balance to the boisterous playing that such a throne master may conduct when armed with a pair of 7A's and a wide-open 4/4.
This amazing piece of drum and rock 'n' roll history is in player's shape and is ready to be played, recorded and gawked at.... cue up the "oohs and ahhs"! This is a vintage drum set and does show some signs of use consistent with its age, but has been fully inspected, tested for functionality (when applicable) and is in the condition as described and pictured.
